WAF names Hatoon al-Fassi, a pioneering Saudi academic, writer, and women’s rights campaigner, as its first Woman of the Month.

Al-Fassi earned her PhD in ancient women’s history in 2000, and is an assistant professor of women’s history at King Saud University. She was a leader of the Baladi (My Country) campaign, which called for women’s full participation in Saudi municipal elections, and led several other movements that sought to win full participation for women in Saudi society. Al-Fassi was arrested in June 2018 as part of a crackdown on women’s rights activists in Saudi Arabia, and she has been imprisoned ever since.
